Autumn Term 2022

Our topic for the Summer Term is "Invasions".  In the Invasion project, your child will explore the effects of the Roman withdrawal and the chronology and geography of subsequent invasions. They will study the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings in detail, examining their reasons for invading, their settlements and their everyday life. Your child will also look at monasteries and the Anglo-Saxon legacy. They will consider how we know about life in this period and investigate the Sutton Hoo ship burial. They will learn about Athelstan, an Anglo-Saxon king, and what happened after his death, before ending the project by learning about the Norman invasion of 1066.

In Maths, we will concentrate on place value and addition and subtraction. Once confident on this area, children will focus on multiplication and division.  In English, the children will create their own "defeating a monster" story, using many techniques such as role play and drama.  Year 4 will also have the opportunity to create and present their own poetry.  In Science, we will cover animals including humans, with a particular focus on digestion and the function of our teeth.

The children will complete the MTC (times table check) in June 2023. Memorising multiplication facts will be an ongoing task and we thoroughly encourage children to access TT Rockstars on a regular basis.

Class novels:

This term we will read Demon Dentist, by David Walliams.  Time is set aside everyday for staff to read to children as a whole class.  In addition, we also take part in The Big Read.  We  read a section of a key text and have a class discussion about what we have read.  The children then answer a key question in APE style (Answer, prove, explain).

Reading is an important life skill and we encourage our children to read all genres of texts both in and outside of school. The children each have a reading challenge to fill in every time they read a book. Once they have achieved their Platinum award they will get a book from Mrs Bromley.

Please note: passwords for the following tools are available if you have lost or can't remember your login details. Please ask Mr Hemraj.

Purple Mash

Homework is sometimes set through our online learning platform called Purple Mash. Each child has been sent home with a password to access this home learning.

Reading

MYON  is a fantastic way to encourage reading at home. The children enjoy the competitive element of getting awards and it is a great way to encourage reading for pleasure.

Our reading challenge is back!

Children have been given a booklet to record all of their reading at home and need to fill in a summary and a review of each book they have read.

Please take note that only one award can be given at a time so please take your time to truly enjoy your books and report back to Mr Hemraj once you have read enough to receive either a bronze, silver, gold or platinum award.

Spellings

Spellings will be sent home once every two weeks on Fridays.

We will carry out a spelling tests every other Friday, so make sure you keep practising at home!

Times tables

Please continue to practice times tables. Games like Hit the Button can be a fun way to do this at speed. We're also having great fun with Times Table Rock Stars!
