PE

Our PE days are every Tuesday & Wednesday. Please remember to bring your full kit of a white t-shirt, black shorts and black pumps/trainers. This half term, we are learning gymnastics.

KS1 Nativity

Years 1 and 2 did a fantastic job learning the carols and their lines at the end of a very busy half term. Despite some nerves, they performed well and sang beautifully. Well done!

Science

Our Science topics this term are: Humans & Animals & Living Things and their Habitats.

Year 2 will learn about the animals offspring, life cycles, identifying changes when growing up, compare what animals and humans need to survive and discuss the importance of healthy eating.

They will also learn about: classifying living, dead and never lived; explain types of habitats; label different food chains and name some different habitats.

There are some fantastic videos on the BBC Bitesize page to support your child's learning at home:

Reading

The decodable books that children read with an adult in class, will be set online through the Collins Big Cat website. The texts that they are reading in school, can be accessed online through a phone, tablet or computer so that they can read at home. Click here to go to the Collins Big Cat ebooks website.

If you need another copy of your child's log in details for the website, please ask the Year 2 staff.

If you are unable to access the books online, or would still like your child to have a physical copy of the book then it can be arranged that they are sent home, however, they must be returned in pristine condition and on time to allow other groups to conduct reading sessions in school.

In addition to the Big Cat texts, we will send a home reader home every Friday. This will be a book of your child's choice which will need to be returned the following Thursday so that it can be changed.

Homework & Spellings

Please send your child in with their book bag each Friday to receive their Maths and English homework along with their weekly reading book.

Spellings are also sent home every Friday for testing the following Friday. The words chosen will include common exception words and words which include the spelling rule focus for the week.

Maths

EYFS and KS1 were very lucky to be accepted onto the Mastering Number programme.

They have been exploring the relationships between numbers and patterns to help build their confidence with number. The short sessions are engaging and often use clips from the popular show Numberblocks.

The videos can be accessed through YouTube and can be a very fun and useful tool to support learning in Maths at home.

This half term, Year 2 will be consolidating their knowledge of place value to solve problems. They will also develop their knowledge of position and direction and time.

English

This term, we will be applying our wider-curriculum topic of Movers and Shakers to inspire our writing including: information texts, biographies, newspaper reports, posters & speeches.

Our focus texts this term will include: Rosa Parks (Little People, Big Dreams), Fantastically Great Women Who Changed the World, 100 People Who Made in History & Malala's Magic Pencil.

Movers and Shakers Project (History)

In the Movers and Shakers project, Year 2 will learn five statements from Dawson's model that will help them identify people who are historically significant and use the words year, decade and century to describe dates and times.

They will study the life and impact of a significant person in the locality and of 10 significant individuals from around the world. They will complete in-depth studies of significant explorers Christopher Columbus and Neil Armstrong, and significant activists Emmeline Pankhurst and Rosa Parks and think carefully about the impact of their actions.

Year 2 will also carry out an independent study of a significant person from the past and learn about people who are significant today. They will also learn how significant people are commemorated and design a memorial for a person they have studied.
