EYFS and KS1 will continue working on the Mastering Number programme this academic year.

Children will explore the relationships between numbers and patterns to help build their confidence with number. The short sessions are engaging and often use clips from the popular show Numberblocks.

The videos can be accessed through YouTube and are a fun and useful tool to support learning in maths at home.

We follow White Rose Maths and our first focus in the Spring term will be place value within 20, before we move on to addition and subtraction within 20. Click here to check out the scheme of learning.

We have a very exciting term ahead with lots of fun learning opportunities.

Our new topic is called Bright Lights, Big City. This project teaches children about the physical and human characteristics of the United Kingdom, including a detailed exploration of the characteristics and features of the capital city, London.

Spellings

Spellings are sent home every Thursday for testing the following Friday. They are based on the phonics phonemes (sounds) that have been taught in class.  Please practice these and the common exception words below with your child.

The spelling test lists for this half term are below. They will be sent home each week, but can be accessed here in case your child loses their sheet.

Reading

The decodable books that children read with an adult in class, will be set online through the Collins Big Cat website. The texts that they are reading in school, can be accessed online through a phone, tablet or computer so that they can read at home. Click here to go to the Collins Big Cat ebooks website.

If you need another copy of your child's log in details for the website, please ask the Year 1 staff.

If you are unable to access the books online, or would still like your child to have a physical copy of the book then it can be arranged that they are sent home, however, they must be returned in pristine condition and on time to allow other groups to conduct reading sessions in school.

In addition to the Big Cat texts, we will send a home reader home every Thursday. This will be a book of your child's choice which will need to be returned the following Wednesday so that it can be changed.

In order to encourage your child to become a lifelong reader, it is important that they learn to read for pleasure. The home reader is a book they have chosen for you to enjoy together. Please make a short note in the reading diary about your child's reading.

Please remember that you shouldn’t expect your child to read this book alone. Read it to or with them. Discuss the pictures, enjoy the story, predict what might happen next, use different voices for the characters, explore the facts in a non-fiction book. The main thing is that you have fun!

Homework

Set on a Thursday- due the following Wednesday

Homework is set every Thursday, they will receive a piece of maths, handwriting or a short writing activity and spellings that are due in the following Wednesday.

Could book bags please be brought in on a Wednesday with homework and home readers, to allow new homework and books to be sent out.

The Collins Big Cat books that link to our Little Wandle phonics scheme will be set online each week.

PE

Our PE days are every Monday and Thursday. Please remember to bring your full kit of a white t-shirt, black shorts and black pumps/trainers.
